It is a nonprofit and
nongovernmental foundation seeking the right for the Liberia war affected
children get education.
The eruption of civil wars in Liberia,
from 1989 to mid 2003 ruined thousands of its citizens and caused the exodus of
millions of that nation’s citizens. These displaced persons took refuge in
other West African countries, primarily Ghana, which gave them sanctuary. The
destructive impact of all this is still evident, including the impact on the
academic and educational visions of hundreds of these Liberian War Affected
children.
The
Caldwell Coffee Farm is a haven to about 15,000 Liberian, 45% of who are
children. Of this percentage hundreds are needy to the extent of being unable
to attend school due to their parents’ impoverished state. Families subsist on
alms from friends and relatives, doing mini gardening and various kinds of low
paid strenuous labor. Many only have enough for one daily meal.
Compounding these familial problems
reflects highly on these children whose hopes and aspirations of becoming
molded responsible future adults are rapidly wearing out, as their unenrollment
and dropout of the academic setting are however breeding them into reversely unfavorable
consequences of teenage prostitution and pregnancy, early child bearing,
parenting, child labor, thievery, begging and others.
It is in this light, that New Hope
Foundation which is a Christian based organization (NEHOF) proposes the Caldwell
Coffee Farm Children’s Education Project (CALCOFACEP) to alleviate the educational hopelessness confronting hundreds of
needy Liberian War Affected Children at the Caldwell Coffee Farm and neighboring
communities and villages.
